Can she take control of her own heart and actions instead of relying on dominating others to finally be redeemed? Or will she choose evil and die in the misery she brings on herself by refusing to honor herself and stop trying to control other people? I would really like to know. That stated, Hallelujah and Amen for a book that finally has something true to say about love! Glory to God in the highest and much gratitude for a book that is a pleasure to read, thank you. My favorite romances are the ones that are believable and this was believable. I especially enjoyed Onric's perspective as he has some revelations about his feelings.
The characters are interesting and we know some about the magic of their world, but we'll learn more about both as the series continues. Prince Onric and Ashlin feel real, not just perfect people. While it could be f I really enjoyed this book. While it could be frustrating as I wanted. Ashlin to stand up for herself and see the truth that everyone else could see, it did mirror real life when someone is in an abusive relationship. I also want to gush about the topic of consent.
This book is clean, so I'm just referring to touching and kissing, but Onric is aware enough to know that he's in a position of power and that she's a servant. She may not feel like she can refuse his advances so he let's her lead.
I won't give too many spoilers, but it's also common for someone to become a prince or princess and for their whole identity to become that. They're married now and that's all they'll ever need.
No thought on how their life will change and how they might lose themselves. Ashlin recognizes she needs to do something for herself and Onric supports her. Loved the book and I'll be reading the rest of the series. Jun 17, Kaye rated it it was amazing.
Vile villain! Emily unleashes one sensational, tantalizing and brilliantly composed work of art, laying out this enchanting storyline and engaging plot, wrapping this baby up sleek, shiny and tight.
Vexing mishaps and surprising circumstances alongside intimidating trials and challenging tribulations noting the compelling twists and wicked turns testing our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. Anarchy runs rampant and havoc is rife, rousting the drama, intrigue, spiraling suspense and intense situations, along with a double dose of devilry, you have one mind-blowing masterpiece.
Braided, bound and entangled, displaying the explosive ups and agonizing downs, grounding in it's strength and awe inspiring in it's depth. Lines blur and boundaries crossed, limitations are stretched and bent, flinging this bad boy forward, kicking it into overdrive, slamming it into a tailspin with an intoxicating culmination.
The characters are realistic, intriguing and authentic with depth and qualities that add just enough flaws for diversity. The scenes are so vividly detailed and descriptive it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them.
Remarkable job Emily, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us. Jun 13, Janene rated it it was amazing. Rating: 4. These characters were multifaceted and likeable. I could envision these scenes so clearly. There was a smooth, coherent flow to this book.
I was given a free advance copy of this book by the author. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy novel takes on fairytales. I will be reading more books by this author. Jun 16, Carolyn Overcash rated it it was amazing. A wonderful, unique, clean version of Cinderella--wish I could leave more stars I loved reading the Shard of Glass.
It is a unique departure from the standard plot of Cinderella. The prince has siblings, and the spare heir interacts with the leading character. In this version, the leading lady works cleaning in the palace getting the rooms ready for the ball. She gets to know members of the royal family, one in particular. The Shard of Glass is not what you suppose either. Magic and at least one A wonderful, unique, clean version of Cinderella--wish I could leave more stars I loved reading the Shard of Glass.
Magic and at least one specific member of the royal family have a unique relationship. One thing never changes in this tale; the stepmother and stepsister are both mean pieces of work. They are characters that you love to hate. A thoroughly delightful tale; fairy tales can make you laugh at life's absurdities. I received a free ARC copy and had the delightful experience of reading the chapters as the author posted them to her reader's group. I loved the delightful gems of unexpected physical action and character interaction.
Readers need to get this book; the author just raised the bar for originality in this beloved classic tale.
Oct 08, Jennifer Chen rated it really liked it. The book was sweet, but honestly there wasn't much going on. I felt like Onric and Ashlin progressed from acquaintances who had good impressions of each other to being in love WAY too fast.
Yes, their interactions are mostly super cute, but the speed just seems unreal, y'know? Almost nonexistent. OOOUU the stepmother and stepsister though. I hated those two so much so they were great villains. She so sweetly and innocently thought that they would help her with getting ready and was so confused and hurt. Ugh, the nasty women. I wish there was a little more conflict to just get my heart racing, though. So i picked this up. Worked a treat. Was really cute. Didn't get them good chest burns???
I don't actually remember if I did because I read this really quickly but the romance was really really good!!! I probably did get them. The tension was actually really good and built up.
Predictable in some places, the gaslighting in it made me uncomfortable in like a slightly triggering way?? As always, wanted more descriptions and tension. A lack of diversity but not surprised. Even though this is a series that retells classic fairytales, the next being a Beauty and the Beast retelling, I didn't think the stories would link into each other. Much better than others that I have read that stick so close to all of the details in the original fairy tale story. This goes away from that scenario in several ways, but each one only adds more depth and enjoyment to this particular story. I don't want to give away any of the wonderful details of this story, but I would encourage you to pick up a copy and read this version! A very well written and ed Submitted by: Vicki from Wyoming An absolutely awesome retelling of Cinderella, but not really!
A very well written and edited book that grabs your attention in the beginning pages and has you holding your breath until the epilogue is finished. Great characterization that will leave you feeling delighted to have "met" or others that lived up to their repulsive selves. Don't expect the same characters or story as the beloved fairy tale. I did receive an ARC copy, but this is my voluntary, honest and completely personal review.
Aug 24, Kim Gregory rated it it was amazing. Cinderella isn't my favorite fairy tale, but I really liked this re-telling, probably because I really liked most of the characters. I kept wishing that Ashlin would have seen what was in the heart of her step-mother and step-sister long before she did - she just had such a needy heart and kept hoping that somehow they could be her family. When Onric and Ian stumble upon her home in the middle of a stormy night, Ashlin shows them kindness and feeds them and gives them a place to sleep for the night, not realizing that they are Princes. After she gets a job at the palace to bring in some very much needed funds, she meets them again and realizes who they are and eventually forms a friendship with Onric, against the orders of her step-mother and her boss at the palace, and they work together to find old objects for the coming ball - at which Ian is to choose a wife.
This is a clean read. Jun 28, Deanna rated it it was amazing. Emily Deady has produced a masterpiece. Just an exquisite retelling of Cinderella that will leave you spell bound. Right down to the smallest detail, book cover to story, meet up seamlessly. Onric and Ashlin have a cute meet that leaves a permanent mark on their hearts for each other. But he is a prince, and she is reduced to a maidservant for her stepmother, has their love got even the smallest shred of happiness.
You will want to add this book to your collection and I would say they rest of this series as well. Aug 02, Book Addict rated it it was amazing.
I am thrilled to say that I've added a new author's name to my list! Emily Deady delivers a sweet and satisfying reimagining of Cinderella.
The character development in this book deserves several rounds of applause. I was fascinated by the idea of "Maji", mages who have been exiled for decades as the people of the continent fear another uprising- but the mages are coming home. Deady's intricate plot and characters with depth will enthrall readers and keep them coming back for more. I know I can't wait to read the next book! Five stars!! These are all fairy tale authors. I read a lot of fairy tales, y'all. Dec 15, Laura rated it really liked it. Tough to get into, but worth it in the end! I just really struggle to relate to the shy, scared, blaming-self-for-everything, overly-self-sacrificial type. Still, it was really nice to follow the developing romance and to see how Onric softens and mellows out around her. YAY for no insta-love! And the ending was really really good! So relieved she finally found her spine heh. Plus I love how the ending wraps up well, while still setting the scene for the next book. Hopefully the next heroine will be a bit more spunky! Dec 20, Sarah S rated it really liked it.
I have had this book on my kindle for months and just got around to finally reading it. I really enjoyed Ashlin's story. It followed the Cinderella retelling to an extent that it hit all the major points of the fairytale but the author really built her own world, with more characters and plot twists.
In fact the only part I truly glossed over was probably the most famous section where she is with her "fairy godmother" getting outfitted for the ball. Once the Templar is defeated in Destiny 2 's Vault of Glass , do not go through the large obvious door. Instead, there will be a secret path that opens on the left of the arena. Jump into the hole in the wall and immediately look up to the right. The sixth shard will be on a small ledge. Shard seven is easily missed if Guardians go too far.
However, they need to follow the secret path down through the cave towards the Gorgon Maze, stopping before the last drop into the maze. Destiny 2 Guardians can find shard number seven in a small hole in the wall to the right. If Guardians are backtracking from the last drop, they will see the hole in the wall straight ahead. Shards eight and nine are in the Gorgon Maze of the Vault of Glass , Guardians can also find the third hidden chest in the maze, however, it is locked behind a minor puzzle.
The secret chest is best done by one Guardian before the rest of the Fireteam progresses through the Maze. The Guardian will need to go through the maze, shooting three Vex blocks that unlock the door to the third secret chest near the start of the Maze.
Shard eight is at the start of the Gorgon maze. Having a Hunter with the Omnioculus Exotic armor will make shards eight and nine much easier to get. From the Gorgon Maze spawn point, there will be a dark cave to the left with two Gorgons. Guardians will need to go into the cave, around the right side of the first rock, and then turn left, the eighth shard is up on a ledge on the right-hand rock.
Continuing to follow this cave to the right will take Guardians to the door guarding the third secret chest. Once at the last large rock before the exit, Guardians will have the exit on the right, but the shard is off to the left in a corner surrounded by lumps of dirt. When exiting the Gorgon Maze, guardians will have a jumping puzzle in front of them, skip the puzzle by going left through yet another hole in the rock wall.
The shard is sitting just behind it. This should be an easy one. Head towards the middle plate, but don't hop up the cliffside.
Instead, there is a little cave at the bottom of the cliff face between the left and middle plate. Go inside and at the back, there should be a little Glass Shard. This one is a little harder to spot, but it is on the critical path. Once you've opened the door to the Vault of Glass. Head down the rocky path until you reach the green room where you drop down for the second secret chest.
There is a hard left turn. Between that and the path you just came from is a little dark nook. It's hard to see but if you look around for a moment you should spot it. After Glass Shard 3, drop down below and head to the area where the second secret chest is.
Once at the chest look up and across from you. Just above the tree, you should see the shard. Glass Shard 5 is a little bit of a pain if you've gone for Glass Shard 4 already, but it is doable. Once you have Glass Shard 4 head down to where you would place the raid banner for the Confluxes encounter. Instead of jumping down, head back up the way you didn't come from. It's a little tricky, but every class can do it. Just look for little ledges in the Vex-y geometry to land on until you get up to the other path.
If you have not collected Glass Shard 4 or gone for the second secret chest, you can just turn left at the green room and head down the critical path until you get to one of the last platforms before having to make a right. You won't be able to get this glass shard until you beat the Templar boss and are ready to head into the Gorgon maze. Once you beat the encounter, instead of heading into the main door, go to the left of the arena.
A small panel will have opened on the side of the structure near where the stairs lead up. If you are a Destiny 1 veteran, this is the room where a secret chest used to be.
Once inside, look up immediately and you will see the shard. This is a tough one to spot. After collecting Glass Shard 6, start your descent towards the Gorgons. Head down even past to where it says you have entered the Labyrinth, but stop when you get to a room with a flat, lowered ceiling.
When you see this, look behind you for a little nook behind a rock. Inside you will find a broken Vex portal and next to a Glass Shard. You want to be headed towards the locked door that contains the third secret chest. In the first room of the cave, two tall rocks will be splitting the room in half, and the Gorgons will try to move in between them.
If you don't care about dying, don't worry about getting seen by a Gorgon. Just hop up and collect it before wiping. For this Glass Shard, head towards the exit of the Gorgon maze in the same manner described in our guide.
However, once you land on the final rock across from the exit. Look at the exit and then turn left. You should see a little corner with a small lip a little down the corridor.
